A wallbox in a terraced house: what the connection can take

Eleven kilowatts are quickly ordered, but not every connection carries them. What the planning really depends on.

The wallbox is ordered, the electrician arrives -- and then the house connection turns out not to play along. That can be settled beforehand, in about twenty minutes.

The connection, not the box, is the limit

An older terraced house often runs on 35 amps per phase. Cooker, water heater and heat pump already share that headroom. A wallbox at eleven kilowatts adds 16 amps -- on paper that often fits, at peak it does not.

What we check before quoting

  • Main fuse and cable cross-section up to the meter cabinet.
  • Free slots and condition of the sub-distribution board.
  • Existing large consumers and whether they run at the same time.
  • Cable route to the parking space including wall openings and groundwork.

Those four points decide whether eleven kilowatts work as they are, whether load management is needed, or whether the grid operator has to be involved.

Every wallbox must be registered; approval is required only from twelve kilowatts up. We handle both, so the installation does not end up formally in a grey area.
